March meeting and program, MARCH 20, 2012
Carve a whimsical moose. We call him a moose gremlin, because he is
designed to sit atop a computer monitor and guard your computer from all
those little gremlins that get inside and cause error messages, frozen
screens, and s-l-o-w operations. Blanks and patterns will be provided.
All you need to bring is a knife, gouge, and pencil. It's a quick
project, so we should be able to get all the carving done in one night.
Then take him home and give him a coat of paint. Jim Miner will lead
this adventurous trek through the north woods to find this moose.

Whittled and Carved Walking Stick Exhibition

CARVED AND WHITTLED SCULPTURE: AMERICAN FOLK ART WALKING STICKS FROM THE HILL COLLECTION.

This exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art of about 100 walking sticks and canes runs through April 1, 2012. In addition to visiting the gallery, there are several lecture and presentations scheduled.

"Learning to Look" - Walk-in tours focusing on learning how to look at and interpret works of art. Thursday, February 9, 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 19, 1:00 p.m. On these dates the subject will be the walking stick collection. Free with admission.

"Curator Voice: Michael Hall" - a conversation about collectors, collecting, and the Hill Collection of walking sticks. Thursday, February 9, 7:00 p.m. $10; member price, $5. Call 614-629-0359 to make a reservation.

Lori Andrews will be doing the February 21st meeting. As requested it will be on color. The program will focus on mixing of colors and painting on carvings, with a brush and washes. If anyone has any specific questions you want answered please let Lori know well before the meeting so that she can be prepared to answer them.

This program can be extremely valuable. Not only will Lori show and explain color, but will help us to understand how color can be applied to the carving, to achieve the desired effects. No more running the risk of ruining a good carving, with a bad paint job.

AN INVITATION TO A ONE DAY WOOD CARVING SHOW

You are invited to exhibit and carve at a one day show Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Whetstone Community Center, 3923 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio. Our purpose is to bring carvers together for an enjoyable day of carving and fellowship and to exhibit our work and interests to the general public.

Hours:

9:00 am - 10:00 am Arrive and set up

10:00 am - 4:30 pm Show hours

4:30 pm - 5:45 Break down

There will be only two prizes - ribbons: (1) People's Choice. The public will vote on one carving of each carver's choice. (2) Best table. Carvers will vote on the exhibited works of their peers.

SALES POLICY Informal sales are permitted. But items may not be marked with price tags and exhibited with the purpose of selling. Violation of this policy will result in either a rental fee or a percentage of sales levied for the use of the facility.

Found Wood

Examples of found wood that one can pick up along any river bank.

Al Jablonski made a presentation on found wood, and the beautiful things that can be made from it. Included in the presentation were slides of pieces that were made from found wood. The main theme of Al's talk was an intention to open the minds of wood carvers to the wide possibilities of using found wood. I suspect that soon you will see several club members walking along the river banks of central Ohio, collecting interesting pieces of wood. I also suspect that in time we will have Al to thank for some beautiful creations from that found wood.

The August 16 meeting and program (6:00-8:00p.m.), Whetstone Rec Center, Room A, Chippers member Al Jablonski will present "Carving Found Wood: Ideas and Projects". Sharing some of his own projects, Al will discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by carving found wood. Any twig, branch, limb, whether it be a Silver Maple sucker or a weathered chunk of driftwood, can present a perfect object for your imagination and knife. Be sure to bring your tools and a piece of found wood.

STONE CARVING WITH DAVE THOMAS

On Tuesday, July 19, Dave will give Chippers and other interested persons a demonstration of stone carving. Dave will cover tools, techniques, and supplies as well as show some of his creations.

Remember, we are complying with summer hours at the Whetstone Recreation Center, so our meeting will run from 6PM to 8PM. Because stone carving is dusty work, we'll be meeting outside at the north end of the parking lot, near the horse show pits. Bring your own folding chair or stool if you want a place to sit.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the Next CHIPPERS meeting and Program, May 17: The program will be MAKE YOUR OWN KNIFE. Harry Hall and Don Neff will guide us in making a carving knife with a mahogany handle and a Warren blade. Don will talk about making your own blades for a custom carving knife. You'll leave the meeting with a new carving knife and the knowledge of how to create the exact tool you need for your carving projects.

All materials will be supplied (blades, handle blanks, adhesive). You need to bring your own tools (a knife, narrow gouge and/or flat chisel to cut out the blade mortise, sand paper, and 4 one inch clamps if you have them).

This program will be one you do not want to miss. Mark your calendars for MAY 17th.

We all have this tool in our shops. It's us. It's you. It's me.....This just might be a good starting place to discuss shop safety.

Come to this meeting prepared to share not only some shop safety tips, but some stories that might illustrate the need for continued attention to shop safety. If I still have all my fingers, I'll the lead the discussion.

Tuesday, December 21, 7:00 p.m. - Annual Holiday Party and Gift Exchange.

Put on your best holiday attire and come prepared to have a bright and lively time in the deep midwinter! Members at the November meeting have drawn names for the gift exchange - a gift requiring about 5 hours of carving. But even if you missed the November meeting, there are still lots of ways to participate:
Bring a snack, treat, or your favorite party food to share.
Consider carving one or more holiday ornaments and bring them for show and tell.
Tom asked for our carving New Year resolutions in last January's blog posting. If you remember your resolution and acted on it, bring some of your work to share.
But most of all, bring yourselves to enjoy our fellowship with one another. Spouses, partners, family, friends, and interested carvers are all welcome and will add to the holiday fun.

NOVEMBER 16 MEETING and PROGRAM

Carving and Printing a Seasonal Woodcut

Apply your carving skills to making a woodcut block and printing it. Hand printed woodcuts are a perfect medium for making pictures, posters, signs, broadsides, greeting cards, bookplates, or any other image in small runs. Text and image may be combined, or either may stand alone. A mirror image of what you want as the final print is relieved from a carving block. The block is then inked and printed. Bring your tools: V-tool, gouges, and a bench or detail knife. A rubber pad or bench hook to keep the block from sliding as you carve would be helpful. Blocks and printing materials will be provided.

How does an idea come to be realized as a completed carving? Carvers often experience challenges in putting their ideas down on paper and then taking the next step to transferring the ideas from paper to the wood block. In this session experienced carver Lori Andrews will share her approach to these challenges and problems. This is the time to get answers to your questions and even bring a project you are presently working on for a consultation.

There has been a change in our August 17, 2010 meeting program. John Beach was originally schedules to conclude his demonstrations an shallow relief carving. John, however, is unable to attend the 17th meeting.

We have juggled the schedule and moved Tom Hindes up into Johns spot. Tom will provide demonstration and instruction is carving a mini Santa pin or ornament.

Tom will provide the necessary Basswood for the carving. These minis start out from pieces of Basswood measuring 3/4" x 3/4" x 4 inches. You need only to bring a glove and your carving tools. Tom uses only a knife, and glove; so you may want to give that a try. We will be carving small, so those who need magnification, bring it.

2010 Ohio State Fair

Each year the COLUMBUS CHIPPERS participate in the Ohio State Fair. Various members provide demonstrations and show some of their carvings.

Participation in the fair is an important way to introduce others to wood carving, and in particular, the Columbus Chippers.

As more photos become available they will be posted.

Shallow Relief Carving

At our July 20th meeting John Beach lead us in a "shallow relief" carving lesson.

John provided the drawing, carbon paper, and the wood for us, and some excellent instruction and tips.

The subject was a very nicely drawn "necessary house".

The first step is to transfer the drawing to the wood. This is done with carbon paper.

After the drawing is transferred to the wood, one merely, as John says, "redraw the lines with your carving knife". You only need to make a shallow, straight in knife cut on the lines.

The next step is to use a skew or gouge to remove a bit of the wood up to the lines that you cut.
The shadows that are created will let the image "jump out" a bit.

The outhouse will be finished at the next meeting to be held on August 17.

I am sure that all who participated in the July 20 meeting/lesson will agree that the project is not only fun but very enjoyable, and nearly stress free. This might be because of the "instructor" or maybe the subject matter. Or both. Remember, for the next meeting on the 17th of August have another outhouse done on the back of the wood. At the next meeting John will show us how to do the path and some of the other items in the scene, as well as finishing the carving. If you were not at the last meeting, don't miss the next one. I am sure you'll have the time to complete the shallow relief carved out house.

To all Chipper’s;

At last months’ meeting, I forgot to pass around a signup sheet for carving at the Ohio State Fair. Please take a few minutes when you receive this to do so now, if you are interested. We will be carving on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31, and August 1. The hours will be from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm. You will have a free ticket into fair, free parking on the grounds, and time before and after carving to see the fair. All of this plus showing a lot of people what woodcarving is all about and how they too can become woodcarvers with the Columbus Chippers.

Please let me know as soon as possible which day or days you would like to carve at the fair. We will be carving inside the Arts and Crafts building at the north end of the fair grounds. July 20 and August 17 Meetings - Relief Carving with John Beach

John Beach will offer a two session class on the skills and technique of low relief carving. On July 20 John will get us started on our own carvings. After some general instructions about relief carving, we'll transfer the pattern to the block and begin work. The pattern will be a simple one, but it may require some homework between sessions. At the second session, August 17, we'll learn techniques for adding leaves, grass, sand, and other background features to add texture, depth, and interest to the carvings.

Bring your tools as well as a bench hook, rubber pad, or whatever device you use to secure your work piece.

June 15, PROGRAM

Drawknife Sharpening and Technique

There are eight types of drawknives, or "draws", each with a unique purpose. They can be used to carve a mast for a schooner, cut a tenon in a framing project, or carve a duck decoy. Ron Hermann of Antiquity Builders of Ohio will once again welcome us to his shop for an evening on draws. Bring your own draws to learn what you have. He'll teach us how to sharpen them and help us put a good edge on our own tools. And we'll have a chance to remove some wood using these versatile tools. It will be an informative, hands-on evening.

CARVING BLOCKHEADS

During the May 18 meeting Bill Shillington lead the members in carving a "Blockhead" football player.

Steve Prescotts book CARVING BLOCKHEADS served as our guide. During the two hours of the meeting good progress was made by most of the members. Bill Shillington provided blanks, and members provided their own knives, gouges, and band aids.

Carve a "Blockhead" Football Player Caricature Carving with Bill Shillington Bill Shillington, who taught us to whittle wooden pliers last year, has agreed to return Tuesday evening, May 18 to lead us in a session to carve a caricature football player. Blanks will be provided. Bring a detail knife, your favorite assortment of gouges, and a carving glove. So, whether you are a Wolverine or a Buckeye, a Bengal or a Brown, get ready to have a great evening carving your favorite football player.

Woodcarving TIPS (From meeting)

This first tip is the home made "depth gauge". This gadget is used to find and transfer locations of parts from a model to the block to be carved. It is easy to use to transfer the depth of specific parts, from the model to the carving. It's also easy to make.

This is home made defuzzer. Rivet and a square of Scotch Brite.

A neat jointed template. Parts can be arranged, then copied to be either reduced or enlarged. Copy then transfered to wood for blank sawing. The joints of the template are fastened by fabric snaps.

A clever handle/hook for holding a smaller carving when painting then hanging it up to dry. Made out of a dowel and cup hooks.

A drying platform. Simple pegboard with dry wall screws up from the bottom to hold carving when being painted and drying.

Johnny Appleseed Woodcarving Show - 2010

The Columbus Chippers were well represented at the Johnny Appleseed Woodcarving Show held this weekend in Mansfield, Ohio. The first photo shows Cora Hursey at her table. In addition to Cora's carvings and wood burnings, her two carousels were, as usual, a great hit.

The high light of Dave Thomas's table this year were the carved angels. Dave's Basswood angel mounted on Walnut was joined by his stone carved angels to make his table unique.

Chris Ford has been a very busy carver. His array of carved birds and ducks was spectacular, as his ribbon count will indicate.

Brenda Turner can always be counted on to set up a table that will be a favorite. Brenda's trademark mice were joined by her equally well carved and finished deep relief work.

Bill Bauer pulled together a large display of excellent turned pens, as well as some very unique bark carvings.

Tom Hindes displayed several Noah's Arks, Gnomes, and various miniature carvings.

Those Chipper members who choose to enter their carvings into the competition did rather well also. Brenda gathered in 4 ribbons, Chris was awarded 6, Dave 3, and Cora 1. Congratulations to these members.

Carvers Wanted!

Harlem township (SE corner of Delaware County, Ohio) is celebrating their bicentennial on August 21 and 22. They are looking for artists / craftsmen, particularly with skills our pioneer ancestors would have used, to come to their celebration and set up sales booths and demonstrate these skills for part of a day, a whole day, or both days. We'd like very much to have a wood carver / whittler as a participant, but so far have been unable to make connections with any Columbus Chipper member.
Artists / vendors participating would keep all profits from their sales and we are not charging any set up fee.

Snow Storm Disrupts February 16 Meeting

The February 16th meeting and program was victim of the snow storm. While some brave souls did manage to get to the Whetstone Center, most did not; including the program presenter. This writer was one who did not make the meeting. Twenty inches of accumulated snow and ice were too much to handle.

But, Dave Thomas has agreed to lead the club in his topic "Carving scrolls, folds ,and banners" on March 2, 2010. Same place (Whetstone Center), 7PM to 9PM.

Your calendars should already be marked, as this is the regularly scheduled "open carving" night.

I have seen what Dave will be presenting, and you will not want to miss it. But, alas, I will have to miss it, as I'll be in Florida for the month.

Any Thoughts for a Grant

The Franklin County Arts Program, which is a part of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, is soliciting proposals for grants for 2010. Grant awards of up to $2000 will be available. There will be three rounds of funding in 2010. Proposal and application deadlines are: Feb 26, May 31, and Oct 29.

Be thinking about applying. Perhaps promoting wood carving with beginners classes, demonstrations, presentation, displays, etc. We can discuss this effort at the next meeting, Feb. 16, 2010.

February 16 Chippers Meeting & Program

Carving Banners and Folds, Dave Thomas

For those who want to carve any type of fabric or fold, this is the program for you! Architectural linen folds, name boards, banners with patriotic mottos for American eagle relief carvings, wall plaques, drapes and clothing on in-the-round human figures: the underlying principles are the same for them all. Dave Thomas will lead this session. Wood and patterns will be supplied. Bring your own tools - knife, gouges, a bench hook or anti-slip pad to keep your work piece from scooting across the table, pencil, etc.

Recap of January 19 Meeting

The January 19th meeting started with a very short business meeting that consisted of the treasurers report, followed by a discussion about the Columbus Woodchippers Blog, and how to use it. As a part of each meeting members show and explain some recently completed projects.

This carved Basswood egg was done by Dan Sullivan.

These excellent pieces of fruit by Ted Scherer, deserve more explanation. Ted's Christmas present to himself was retirement. Ted started out his retirement by saying that he would set a goal of carving at least one item each day. I thinks he's on target.

The rocking horses are also Ted's, as are the crosses. The crosses are all in the range of 1 1/2 inches, and consist of wood and corian inlays. Now these crosses present a kind of interesting situation that begs for further research. You see Ted is a chain saw carver.

Apologies to Steve Larrick, the photo of his nearly completed, and excellent Old World Santa; somehow got lost in the vast inter space that seems to rear its head every now and then and swallow up important data and photos. Hopefully when Steve completes the Santa we'll get a photo to post up.
Following the brief business meeting, this months program consisted of a Swap Fest. Members brought carving related items to contribute. All members names were put into hat and drawn. As your name was drawn you made your choice from the swap items. The items to choose from were, carving books, Basswood, Cottonwood bark, Butternut, detail knives, finishes, gouges, strop compound, carving blanks, sharpening stones, and project kits.

Columbus, Woodworking Show - 2010

Each year the Columbus WoodChippers set up tables at the Woodworking Show. This gives the club a chance to introduce others to wood carving, and to the Chippers carving club. The members display some of their carvings and answer questions, about both carving and the Chippers. Some members provide carving demonstrations. The following photos are from Sunday, January 17th.

Chipper's Meeting January 19, 2010 - Program

All of us have acquired, either by purchase or gift, items related to our interest in carving that we no longer need or plan to use. Such items might include:

Wood

Books on carving, woodworking, shop techniques, art, drawing, painting,sculpture, related crafts, etc. Books or folios with illustrations of human and animal subjects for reference. Color wheels.

Videos and DVDs

Tools

Oils, waxes stains, or other finishes we will not use again.

Artists' brushes, paints, (acrylics, oils, tube water colors), water color and acrylic pens.

Carving patterns

Figurines, mannequins, or other models.

Use your imagination! Remember, one person's trash may be anther's treasure.

How we'll do it: All our items will be displayed on the swap table. After everyone has had a chance to look them over, we'll draw names out of a hat to determine the order in which we each select an item to take home. We'll go on until the table is empty. (Any unclaimed items will either be discarded or - as in the case of finishes or other toxic items - taken back by the donors.)

It's time to clean out the shop and find some new treasures.

New Years - Challenge!

Here's a suggestion and a challenge (resolution) that I am posting. As a woodcarver, why not set at least one new woodcarving goal for the new year.

This goal could be as simple as a new carving to begin and complete. It may be to try your hand at a different style of carving, or to take a carving class. However, I think it should be a step forward on our journey to improving our woodcarving skills.

Whether you're a Chipper member or not, why not add this "resolution" to your new years list. Just go to the bottom of this posting and click on the "comments", and post what your new carving goal for 2010 is.

With a block of basswood in hand,
It's not very long, when before my blue eyes,
I've created the face of a man.

My first try at carving is over for now,
And I'm very happy to say;
That I'll come back again with my bags and my tools,

What's In A Name - Chippers or WoodChippers?

The Columbus Chippers was formed as a wood carving club in January of 1972. The club was known of as the Columbus Chippers, or just the Chippers. However, in 1977 the Columbus Jets, of the International Baseball league, became the Columbus Clippers. You might say, "what does this have to do with a carving club named the Columbus Chippers"? It wasn't too long before the Chippers carving club received an invoice from the local newspaper for $3000 worth of advertising. Yep! some name confusion. "CHIPPERS - CLIPPERS". Thus, the addition of the word "Wood" to the clubs name. You'll still see the club referred to as the Columbus Chippers, and the Columbus WoodChippers.

Columbus WoodChippers - Meetings

The Chippers meetings are held in Columbus, Ohio at the Whetstone Community Center, 3923 N. High Street, in classroom A. The center is next door to the Whetstone Public Library, at the entrance to Whetstone Park of Roses.

The Chippers meetings are from 7 PM to 9PM on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The first Tuesday meeting is for carving. Bring your tools and a project to work on. Get your questions answered, get help, and enjoy the company of other woodcarvers. Beginning carvers are always welcome.

The third Tuesday meetings usually consist of a brief business meeting, reports by members who have visited other clubs, shows, and carving classes. "Show and Tell", where carvers display their latest creations or any carving related item of interest. These meeting usually have a demonstration or presentation of interest to the membership. And of course, carving is encouraged during the meeting.

Anyone who has an interest in woodcarving, or would like to learn more about the club is welcome to attend any meeting.

Important Decision Made! Club Dues!

In the spirit of Christmas, financial restructuring, and/or just the plain application of recession economics; the clubs annual dues have been reduced from $15 to $5. And to remind all, next years dues are "due" next month.

Whittling & Carving - Columbus WoodChippers

This is a new blog!

The primary purpose of this blog is to present timely information about the activities and events of the Columbus WoodChippers carving club.

The Columbus WoodChippers carving club was formed in January 1972. The purpose of the club is to promote and perpetuate the craft of whittling and carving through friendship among wood carvers.

This blog will help in the promotion of whittling and wood carving is several ways.
First, as a blog it will be accessible to the general public, in addition to the membership. In this manner, the public with an interest in whittling and wood carving will have a source of information that may be of value to them. The blog will serve as a vehicle to post important information about the Chippers current and future activities. The blog will post and share whittling and carving information on projects, plans, and techniques. It is expected that carving tutorials will be a part of this blog.

The blog will also provide an immediate feedback feature in the form of comments from readers.

The blog will officially get under way on January 1, 2010, but there will be postings before then. Come back and check us out.....

Whether you are a member of the Columbus WoodChippers or just interested in whittling and wood carving, you should find something of interest.
